Recently, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has partnered with the technology company Modex to release a limited edition dual NFT collection, set to launch later this week.
According to the announcement, there will be a total of around 900 NFTs, including memorable moments from past tournaments and digital versions of memorabilia, released on the Polygon blockchain and listed on OpenSea, with a scheduled release date of December 19, 2023. However, FIFA will introduce 100 different NFTs on December 15, 2023.
Notably, rare NFT owners will receive tickets to attend the 2026 World Cup final.
When asked about the collaboration, Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex, shared: “Digital collections enhance how fans can interact with their favorite players, teams, and matches. We are honored to be the strategic management partner for FIFA’s digital collection platform and to accompany FIFA in achieving this goal.”
However, the partnership between Modex and FIFA marks a significant step forward and demonstrates the usefulness of Web3 technology in promoting community engagement.
FIFA first introduced “FIFA + Collect” in 2022, a series of NFTs advertised to offer global football fans the opportunity to own unique digital artworks at affordable prices. The new collection was unveiled just before the FIFA Club World Cup 2023, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from December 13 to December 22, 2023.
Initially, FIFA’s NFTs were launched on Algorand, but the organization intends to “move house” to Polygon in the second phase of the new collection. Future collections will also be released on this layer2.
Prior to FIFA, many other crypto names in the field leveraged professional sports to connect with consumers, including OKX exchange – expanding sponsorship contracts with Manchester City; and France’s Sorare – striking NFT deals with the English Premier League.
