According to a blog post on November 1st by the Worldcoin project team, their World App mobile application has achieved a significant milestone with over 4 million downloads. If confirmed by CoinGecko, this could place the World App in the sixth position on CoinGecko’s list of most downloaded software wallets.
The Worldcoin development team, known as Tools for Humanity, also announced that they now have over 1 million monthly users, doubling their figures from six months ago.
Worldcoin allows users to prove their identity by scanning their eyes. After scanning their eyes, users receive a “world ID” that can be used to verify with applications that they are not bots. Each verified user receives 25 WLD tokens, valued at approximately $46.50 USD at the time of writing.
The project has gained popularity in developing markets like Argentina, where some participants see signing up and then selling the tokens as a quick way to earn extra income.
However, Worldcoin has also faced criticism for being seen as a privacy threat. Critics argue that it is overly centralized and could lead to users’ data being exposed publicly.
To withdraw their WLD tokens, Worldcoin users need to download the World App to create an account. In the November 1st post, the team mentioned that the app has now been downloaded over 4 million times. This places it above the Solana Phantom wallet but below the Bitcoin.com wallet in CoinGecko’s list of the most popular wallets.
Some registered users appear to continue using the app after downloading it. The app has reached 1 million monthly users, 500,000 weekly users, and 100,000 daily active users, according to the blog post. This figure represents a doubling of the monthly active user count from six months ago.
