On November 5th, Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, released the beta version of “Grok” – an AI chatbot believed to outperform the initial ChatGPT version from OpenAI in some academic tests.
The motivation behind building Grok is to create AI tools that empower and assist humans in research and innovation. Grok has a “fundamental and unique advantage” as it has real-time world knowledge through the X platform.
Notably, the development team describes Grok as “very humorous and has a rebellious personality, so if you dislike humor, you shouldn’t use this chatbot.” Additionally, xAI adds, “Grok will answer tricky questions that most other AI systems would reject.”
Currently, Grok is integrated into the X social platform. Users who want to use this chatbot need to sign up for a $16 per month X Premium Plus account. However, Grok is still in development and is only available in the United States.
In the near future, the development team will work on expanding Grok’s applications and implementing more security measures to ensure that Grok is not used for malicious purposes.
