Joseph Mills, Group Product Manager at Google Play, announced a significant policy change in a tweet. Google Play will now officially allow developers to integrate digital assets such as NFTs into their apps and games on the platform.
This is the latest move by Google Play after a five-year period since the company banned cryptocurrency mining apps from the store in 2018.
Although the new policy is expected to increase opportunities for blockchain app developers, it also includes strict requirements. Developers are required to publicly disclose whenever their app allows users to buy or earn cryptocurrency and blockchain assets.
On the other front, Apple’s App Store, the rival of Google Play, has taken a more stringent approach towards apps with blockchain elements and has longer approval times before they can be officially pushed to the app store. Additionally, the App Store openly charges up to 30% fees for NFTs sold through game versions on the App Store.
