Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, known as Base, experienced a major outage for the first time since its public launch on August 9th.
For about 45 minutes on September 5th, no new blocks were being produced on the Base chain. Developers first identified the block production “stalling” at 4:36 . Block production was later reconnected.
“We have identified a delay in our block production process due to the need for a refresh of some of our internal infrastructure. We have deployed a fix and are seeing a widespread recovery,” Coinbase stated.
Base mentioned that they are continuing to monitor the chain to detect any further issues.
Matt Willemsen, Head of Research at the cryptocurrency education platform Collective Shift, emphasized the differences in using Ethereum’s Layer 2 network and stated that they have not been “battle-tested” like the Ethereum mainnet.
