Recently, Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project co-founded by Sam Altman, has introduced a new version of its technology called “World ID 2.0.” Additionally, they have integrated this new version into several online platforms such as Minecraft, Reddit, Telegram, Shopify, Mercado Libre, and Telegram.
Here are some of the applications of World ID 2.0 on these platforms:
– Reddit moderators can use World ID to verify users and their privileges.
– Shopify store owners can deploy this ID for marketing activities and fraud prevention.
Notably, World ID was previously integrated with platforms like Discord, Talent Protocol, and Okta’s Auth0.
According to Worldcoin’s announcement, World ID 2.0 allows app developers to choose between different levels of authentication, ranging from “lite” to “max.” Currently, there are three authentication levels:
1. “Basic” level only requires creating a profile within the Worldcoin app.
2. “Standard” level adds the feature of iris scanning, a crucial feature supported by the company’s unique Orb technology.
3. “High” level includes facial recognition to enhance security.
This tiered system enables users to select different levels of security and verification.
It’s worth noting that creating a World ID does not require real names or identification, allowing for user anonymity. However, the development team acknowledges that the system still has limitations, such as the ability for users to create multiple World IDs on different devices. This limitation persists until iris scanning with Orb, after which users are restricted to one unique ID.
In addition to these technological developments, Worldcoin is expanding its operations to Mexico and Singapore, with plans for further expansion into Asia. This expansion is part of the company’s goal to make Orb technology globally accessible.
However, the project has faced notable challenges, such as a ban in Kenya due to local concerns about data security and privacy. There have also been criticisms of Worldcoin’s approach in developing countries, especially regarding the distribution of the WLD token as an incentive for registration.
Despite these challenges, Worldcoin reports significant growth. According to the official Worldcoin website, nearly 5 million people worldwide have created World IDs, with approximately 2.6 million undergoing iris scanning. Over 100,000 new accounts were created just in the past week.
While Worldcoin has shown clear growth, achieving global acceptance remains a significant milestone in Worldcoin’s journey. The project states that the focus for 2024 will be on improving the platform and expanding global access.
